At a time when so much divides us, our national parks are a cause that every American can rally around. They are our common ground, and right now our parks need us as much as we need them.
Almost 99 years ago, a small group of advocates realized that national parks needed a voice outside of government to speak up for them, make sure they receive the funds they need to preserve our nation’s natural and cultural treasures, and protect them from outside threats. NPCA remains the voice of national parks, and that voice has never been needed more than today.
National parks are experiencing record numbers of visitors, yet they continue to suffer from chronic underfunding. They face threats on their doorstep, from a proposed casino development near the hallowed grounds of Gettysburg to pollution from surface coal mining right outside of Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area.
As you’ll read in this annual report, we’ve been able to bolster funding for national parks and keep many of these threats at bay in the past year. New threats will surely emerge, though, and we’ll need all the help we can get to protect our parks from harm.
